APRIL 2009
- Everyday – Rogue Wave (Given to me by my sister’s friend, quiet, first loved the Buddy Holly version (the original) of this song from a cassette tape of the Stand By Me soundtrack that I had with me most of my childhood in a walkman, and now resides in my car.)
- Late In The Evening – Paul Simon (Heard this on 93.9FM The River Radio, my new absolute favorite station. This channel introduces me to exactly the music I want to be listening to on a daily basis, like this song. You can tell within 2 seconds that it’s a Paul Simon song, and that’s part of what I love about it.)
- Simple – K.D. Lang (Dad bought me this CD for my birthday last year. The album is Hymns Of the 49th Parallel, and it is filled with incredible covers. I saw her on The Today Show performing “Helpless” (Neil Young) and got crazy into finding all the amazing covers she recorded. Ironically, this is the only track on the record that is not a cover; it was co-authored by Lang and David Piltch.)
- Lake Michigan – Rogue Wave (Another song given to me by my sister’s friend, Wesley… Thank god I have access to that generation still, otherwise how would I find this stuff???)
- Dreaming of the Plum Trees – White Hinterland (Got this song for free from Amazon. They have free samplers and individual tracks available all the time, and a lot are pretty good. Sign up for the newsletter.)
- Apocalypse – Wyclef Jean (One of my favorite albums of all-time, bought it the year it came out as part of my Columbia House membership, which I miss. Getting a CD in the mail every month, it was truly amazing. I still listen to all of those CD’s too… Toni Braxton, White Orchid, The Fugees, Will Smith, a few amazing soundtracks. I love the opera-like opening voice in this song.)
- Strange Overtones – David Byrne & Brian Eno (Another free track from Amazon, and actually the song that enabled
me to discover free Amazon tracks. So the story goes, I heard it on 93.9 (you should stream them from their website!), and went to buy it on Amazon later that day, only to discover the whole free MP3 system on Amazon. This was a good discovery, as you can imagine.) - Hey World (Don’t Give Up Version) – Michael Franti (This came on shuffle one day while I was on facebook, and I loved it. I have no idea where I got the track from. Isn’t that wack?)
- Bluebirds – Kensington Prairie (Got this from one of the Paste Magazine sampler albums. You would love Paste. I’m going to make you an MP3 disc of all the sampler albums, because I think you’d like a lot of their music selections.)
- Shine On – The Kooks (Another song given to me by my sister’s friend, Wesley.. Thank god I have access to that generation still, otherwise how would I find this stuff???)
- People Will Say We’re In Love – Ray Charles & Betty Carter (I got crazy into Ray Charles covers in 2006 (did I ever send you his cover of “Eleanor Rigby”? I NEED to, if I haven’t, so please tell me!!!), and bought this album off Amazon while I was living in New York. It was actually the only album I bought while I lived there.)
- Eyes – Rogue Wave (Another song given to me by my sister’s friend, Wesley.. Thank god I have access to that generation still, otherwise how would I find this stuff???)
- Mighty Fine Blues – Eels (Another song given to me by my sister’s friend, Wesley.. Thank god I have access to that generation still, otherwise how would I find this stuff???)
- Troublemaker – Weezer (From the high schooler, but I probably would have heard this song at some point in my life because my fiancee is a humongous Weezer fan. Like, wearing Weezer teeshirts every weekend fan.)
- She Moves In Her Own Way – The Kooks (Another song given to me by my sister’s friend, Wesley.. Thank god I have access to that generation still, otherwise how would I find this stuff???)
- Silly Boy – The Blue Van (Another song given to me by my sister’s friend, Wesley.. Thank god I have access to that generation still, otherwise how would I find this stuff???)
- The Bucket – Kings Of Leon (Have you heard that song “Use Somebody” that is giving Kings of Leon a lot of press lately? I love it. This is from the high schooler, and proved to me that this is a band that I definitely love beyond what’s on the Top 40. There was a Jeopardy category last week about the actual Kings of Leon (not the band), and it was very bizarre. That wonderful province of Spain actually had rulers named Sancho I the Fat, Ordono IV the Wicked, Henry II the Bastard, Henry III the Infirm, Henry IV the Impotent, Philip I the Handsome, and (according to Jeopardy) Alfonso the Drooler.)
- Major Tom – Shiny Toy Guns (this is from a Lincoln commercial, and for a short while, Lincoln was giving the MP3 away for free on their website. Luckily, I had good timing. Now, it’s the #2 track downloaded on Amazon.com, and I got it for free. This was a good month for free-ness, as you can tell! You can recognize the title of this track from David Bowie’s discography, but I think the song is completely unrecognizable as a Bowie cover. The techno remix of the Bowie original is in fact a 1980’s cover by Peter Schilling of David Bowie’s song. Okay, so this is a cover of a remixed cover. Confused yet?)
- Starman – David Bowie (Heard this on 93.9, then watched the E! True Hollywood Story behind David Bowie (and was quite stunned), then interlibrary loaned this album, The Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders From Mars.)
